NEW Post-Surgery PC Recovery

Your chest is flat.
Keep it that way.

A compression bar is holding your sternum back, and the next weeks decide whether it stays. The complete, cited recovery plan for after surgery.

Four phases, from the hospital stay to return-to-sport. You progress on your surgeon's clearance, never the calendar.

After the operation

The surgery is done.
Now what?

Carinatum surgery is reserved for the rigid, severe cases, and once the bar is fixed across your chest, you're sent home to protect a correction with barely a plan for it. The first weeks decide whether the sternum stays back, and posture is half that battle.

You're afraid to move and shift the bar
The bar is fixed to your ribs and needs scar tissue to stabilise. Until then, twisting, heavy load or a knock can displace it, the classic hardware complication. This shows you exactly how to move, log-roll, cough and sleep safely.
Sent home with no recovery plan
Your surgeon compressed the protrusion; what to do for the next twelve weeks to keep it there was left unsaid. This is that missing plan, breathing, posture, walking and when to load, in order.
Your posture is fighting the correction
Carinatum is a chest-forward, over-arched pattern. Spend recovery thrusting the chest out and you fight the very compression the bar just made. The posture phase trains ribs-down, sternum-relaxed, the position that keeps you flat.
Early pain you weren't ready for
Hardware against the nerves between your ribs makes early pain real. Staying ahead of it with scheduled non-opioids, and breathing deeply despite it, is what prevents a chest infection. Both are covered in detail.
No idea when you can train again
Lift when? Press ever? Most advice is vague. You get a clear timeline and a phased gym + bodyweight program that starts on clearance, pull-dominant and ribs-down core first, pressing last.
You don't know the red flags
A click, a fever, a shape change, sudden breathlessness, which are normal and which mean call the surgeon now? The complications chapter spells out what is expected and what is an emergency.
If any of that is you

The plan you should have
left hospital with.

Not generic post-op advice, a phase-by-phase recovery program written specifically for carinatum repair, with every claim cited so you and your surgical team can trust it.

Mihail Veleski
What this program is

Not a page of don'ts.
A plan to keep it flat.

The problem with most post-op advice is that it's a page of restrictions and a follow-up date. Nothing on how to breathe without pushing the sternum forward, how to move so the bar stays put, or how to rebuild strength without driving the chest back out.

This program runs the whole arc in order: settle the repair and restore ribs-down breathing first, train the chest-down posture that keeps a corrected carinatum flat, rebuild the back and core so that posture holds, then return to full training. Physiotherapy alongside carinatum treatment measurably improves outcomes, and enhanced-recovery pathways cut pain and shorten stays.

A structured four-phase sequence, not a list of restrictions
Hardware-safe movement: log-rolling, coughing, lifting limits, sleep
Ribs-down breathing and the posture that keeps the sternum back
A pull-dominant gym + bodyweight program that starts on clearance
The Recovery Roadmap

From surgery
to normal.

Recovery is a sequence, not a guess. Every stage has one job, and you only move on when your surgeon clears it, not when the calendar says so.

Prehab Before surgery

Go in fit and ready, practise ribs-down breathing, build a back and posture base, sort nutrition, and set up home for the first two weeks.

The hospital stay ~5 days

Multimodal pain control, walking on day one, hourly breathing work and clot prevention, what to expect and how to make it count.

Phase 1 · Protect & breathe Weeks 0–2

Settle the repair and restore breathing without straining the chest wall. No twisting, no thrusting the chest forward, log-roll everywhere.

Phase 2 · Posture & mobility Weeks 2–6

Train the chest-down, ribs-in posture that keeps a corrected carinatum flat, and wear any prescribed brace exactly to schedule.

Phase 3 · Progressive strengthening Weeks 6–12

Rebuild the back, core and shoulders on your surgeon's clearance so posture holds the correction. The gym + bodyweight program begins.

Phase 4 · Return to full activity Months 3–6+

Progress toward full training and most sport while keeping the posture that maintains the result. Collision sport only with clearance.

Why recovery decides the result

The bar compresses it.
Posture keeps it flat.

Two risks dominate the early weeks: shallow breathing that collapses the lower air sacs, and a posture relapse that pushes the corrected chest back out. Active, guided rehab handles both, and the gains in confidence after repair are well documented.

~99.5%

of patients rate the aesthetic result of the minimally invasive Abramson repair excellent-to-satisfactory. Protecting that result through recovery (posture, breathing and patience) is what this program is for.

~26%

cumulative complication rate for the Abramson technique, mostly hardware-related and manageable. Disciplined, bar-aware recovery is exactly how you stay on the right side of that number.

First 6 weeks

is when body image, self-esteem and confidence climb the most after pectus repair. Staying active and upright through recovery is what turns a corrected chest into a confident one.

From the evidence

Minimally invasive carinatum repair carries excellent aesthetics and shorter stays than open repair, with a cumulative complication rate around 26%; physiotherapy as an adjunct to carinatum treatment improves outcomes. Every figure in the program maps to a numbered reference you can check.

What's inside

The whole recovery,
start to finish.

Every chapter is written for after surgery and every claim carries a citation, so you can trust it, and so can the surgeon and physio you're working with.

Who wrote this

Built around your surgeon,
never around them.

My name is Mihail Veleski. I've spent over a decade helping people through every stage of pectus, including the ones who chose surgery and needed a clear, safe plan for everything that comes after the operating room.

This program doesn't compete with your surgical team. It organises the breathing, posture, pacing and progressive strengthening that protect your repair and keep the result, every recommendation cited, every limit deferring to your surgeon's clearance.

What people ask
before they begin.

The four that come up most, answered the same way I would answer them on a call.

Take the 60-second quiz
How long before I see a change? +

Posture and breathing shift first - most people feel that inside the first few weeks. Visible chest change is slower. In the case log above, Milo saw his first real change at 2 months, Ian at 6, Liam at 9. The programs run 16 weeks because that is roughly how long it takes for the training to show up in the mirror.

Am I too old for this to work? +

Almost certainly not. The clients documented on this page were 22 to 32 when they started. Cartilage does stiffen with age, so progress is slower the older you are - but slower is not the same as stopped. What changes is the timeline, not whether it is worth doing.

Do I need a gym, or can I do this at home? +

Either works. Every program ships with a gym track and a no-equipment track for the same 16 weeks, so you pick the one that matches what you actually have access to. You can switch between them mid-program without losing your place.

Pectus excavatum, carinatum, rib flare - is it the same plan? +

No, and that matters. A sunken chest and a protruding chest need close to opposite work, and rib flare often rides along with both. There is a separate program for each. If you are not sure which one you have, the 60-second quiz sorts it out and points you at the right starting place.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is this a substitute for my surgeon's advice? +

No, and it says so on every page. This program organises the breathing, posture, pacing and strengthening around your recovery, but your surgeon and physiotherapist always come first. Where their instructions differ from anything here, follow theirs. It's designed to make you a better-informed patient, not to replace your team.

I've already had my surgery, is it too late to start? +

Not at all. It's ideal to read before your operation, but the bulk of the program is the twelve-week-plus recovery that happens at home. Whatever week you're in, pick up from the matching phase and use everything from there forward.

When can I start lifting again? +

Resistance training usually begins around week six and only on your surgeon's clearance, building to full loading by about three months. The program lays out a phased track that is pull-dominant with a ribs-down core first and brings pressing in last, with clear "not yet" lists so you don't push too early.

Will this help with the pain? +

It explains the multimodal approach your team uses and how to get the most from it, staying ahead of pain with scheduled non-opioids, tapering opioids early, splinting a cough, and the breathing that prevents a chest infection. It is education, not a prescription; your pain medication comes from your surgical team.

What format is it in? +

It's a structured, written program you can read on any device, clear chapters and phases with tables and a day-by-day routine, so you can reference exactly what you need mid-recovery without scrubbing through video. Every factual claim links to a numbered reference.

Is it specific to the Abramson repair? +

Yes. It is written around the Abramson compression repair, with the open Ravitch repair covered too. The hardware-safety, breathing and posture guidance is specific to a chest now held flat by a bar.

How is this different from free advice online? +

Free content is scattered, a breathing tip here, a restriction there, none of it sequenced or sourced. This is the whole recovery in order, written for after surgery, with every claim cited. The value is the system and the trustworthiness, not the individual facts.

What's your refund policy? +

30 days, no questions asked. Read the program, use it, and if it isn't what was described, email me for a full refund.

Your chest is flat.
Keep it that way.

The complete, cited recovery plan for after pectus carinatum surgery, prehab to full return to sport, in the order that protects the correction and keeps it flat.
